Jasprit Bumrah’s most expensive Test over came against Australian debutant Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test. The 19-year-old’s aggressive batting against the Indian spearhead impressed former Australian opener David Warner, who urged his teammates to emulate Konstas’ fearless approach.
Sam Konstas became the third fastest to score a half century on debut, reaching the milestone in 52 balls. He has also played under David Warner for the Sydney Thunders at the BBL, and has often impressed the captain.
“It was very special,” he told Fox Cricket “People are going to criticise him as well. That’s the nature of the beast, that’s the way he is going to play.”
While appreciating his confidence and aggression with the bat, he also hopes that the other experienced players follow in with the same mindset.
“Him being brave at the top of the order, you’ve got guys who have played 50 Tests, they could have been brave as well, they could have played different shots, they could have moved out of their crease and batted different.
After the Boxing Day Test ended, Bumrah leads the list with 30 wickets in this year’s Border Gavaskar Trophy, and an average of 12.83. And while Konstas was enjoying his time in the middle in the first innings, his wicket fell to Bumrah who went on to finish the match with nine wickets.
“To put him off that is tough. You can’t just try and negate that. ‘Uzzy’ (Usman Khawaja) managed to face two balls in his first spell. That’s luck batters need as well.
“Fortunately for him, he got a half-century. Hopefully that builds momentum and gives him that positive energy to come into Sydney where he’s got a good record as well.”
The fifth and final India vs Australia Test will start in January 3 in Sydney.
