How to Make a Rag Rug | Easy Sewing Project
Recently I’ve noticed that we just don’t have enough rugs in the house. My kids keep on running around and just soils the living room floor every time they enter. And it’s no fun cleaning up after them all the time. So instead of going to a store and buy new rugs, I decided to look for an easy sewing project where I can make rugs that will also add a little accent to our home. And I found these adorable rag rugs!
If all you can sew right now is a straight line with a sewing machine, then this is your next sewing project! It’s a great way to practice sewing and at the same time you can upcycle almost any fabric you have in your home. If you want to use old tshirts or bed covers, you can definitely do that with this DIY project!
Materials for your DIY rag rug:
- towel
- fabric (you can use any color you want)
- scissors
- measuring tape or ruler
- pen or marker
- sewing machine
- thread
Step 1
Lay your fabric out and start cutting small rectangles. I’m cutting mine 4×1 inches.
Step 2
Draw a line about an inch apart so you’ll have a guide for the rows you’ll be making. You can use a small or bigger towel, this will be the base of the rug and will decide how big or small your rug will be.
Step 3
Take your cut fabric and lay them on the towel in the pattern that you want. Slightly overlap them from each other. It’s also advisable to lay them out halfway and not all the way down so you won’t have any problems when you move it to the sewing machine.
Step 4
With your sewing machine sew it by following the line you made earlier. Just sew it in a straight line.
Step 5
Once you’ve reached the last fabric, just continue adding and sewing until you reach the end of your towel.
Step 6
Yay! You’ve sewn your first row! Fold the sewn fabric and add another row. Repeat this until you’ve completely filled out all rows.
Wasn’t that easy? You’ve just made a DIY rag rug using upcycled materials.
Something you should take note of, it may take you longer depending on two factors: one, the size of the rug you’re making and two, the gap you’ll put between the rows. If you want to make it as quickly as possible, you can make the rows a bit further apart. I wanted to make it look fluffy and snug so I’ve sewn the rows closer together.
Once I’ve completed mine it was so hard to get my kids off it. It was so soft and comfy, they even said that it sort of tickles their feet when they stand on it. It’s a DIY craft project I’d love to make again.
