Coco Gauff – ‘I love Tik Tok, but ban will force me to read books more, be a more productive human probably…’

Coco Gauff wrapped up her Round 4 match at the Australian Open to continue her unbeaten start to 2025 with her 9th consecutive win on Sunday. But looming in her mind was the sudden stop of Tik Tok activity, something she expressed while scribbling “RIP TikTok” on the camera.

While CNN quoted her as revelling in matching Margaret Court, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and Serena Williams on the 9 perfect starts to the season, she was seen mourning the shutting of the social media site TikTok, hugely popular amongst American youth, with its impending ban on Sunday.

Incoming president Donald Trump though could throw in a whim, and overturn the decision. Still, attend AO, Gauff was in a slight sulk that her favoured escape was disappearing, though she shrugged to say it might push just her towards reading books, etc to become a “more productive human.”

“Hopefully it comes back. It’s really sad … I love TikTok. It’s like an escape. I honestly do that before matches,” she told reporters. “I guess it’ll force me to read books more, be more of a productive human probably. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise,” she added

Gauff plays her quarters on Tuesday and will play 11th seed Paula Badosa for a place in the semifinals.

Earlier when reminded of joining greats like Graf and Seles in a perfect January beginning, she said in her on-court interview, “It’s pretty crazy to be amongst the same stat line as legends and I’m very grateful.”

Gauff also revealed what had brought in the tenacity and consistency into her – her father’s words.”It’s funny because I felt like a couple of years ago I had a really bad flat line, where if I lost the first set I’d lose the match, and I remember my Dad was like: ‘You have to get some fight in you’, so every time I think about that and dig deeper,” she said afterwards.

When Aryna Sabalenka was asked about Tik Tok’s impending ban, she was phlegmatic and left it to authorities to do their thing. “I heard about that,” said the world number one, who shared a TikTok dance with the crowd after her first-round win. “This is not something we can control. I hope they figure it out, because I love TikTok.”

However the US third seed’s broken heart + scribble on the camera lens, left a lasting image. Then the lens cover film was changed, and some book pages awaited their chance to be flipped through, by a tennis great-in-the-making.
