Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk expressed his disbelief upon learning that the Football Association (FA) had detected a positive drug test.
According to reports from Ukraine, an “A” sample taken at the end of October contained a forbidden chemical. According to the same reports, the “B” sample has not yet been examined but will be done in the days ahead.
“I can confirm that I have been notified that a sample I provided to The FA contained a banned substance,” Mudryk stated on Instagram. “This has come as a complete shock as I have never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules and I am working closely with my team to investigate how this could have happened.
“I know that I have not done anything wrong and remain hopeful that I will be back on the pitch soon. I cannot say any more now due to the confidentiality of the process, but I will as soon as I can.”
Chelsea confirmed that the FA contacted them after Mudryk supplied an “adverse finding in a routine urine test.”
A club statement issued by Chelsea said Mudryk “confirmed categorically that he has never knowingly used any banned substances” and the club will “work with the relevant authorities to establish what has caused the adverse finding.”
According to FA guidelines, footballers can be provisionally suspended from football after a positive drug test. However, when approached by BBC Sport, the FA would not disclose whether Mudryk, 23, was now provisionally suspended or when the test would take place. According to FIFA criteria, players who willfully use a banned substance may face a four-year penalty.
Mudryk last appeared for Chelsea on November 28 and has missed the last five matches in all competitions. He was named to the Blues’ matchday squad for their win over Aston Villa on December 1, but did not play. Head coach Enzo Maresca has publicly said that Mudryk was absent due to illness.
