Liver is an internal organ that is very essential for life. It performs a wide range of functions and helps the body dealwith toxic substances by neutralising themin the blood and also processes the nutrients from food. The liver is used for detoxification, metabolism, bile production, protein synthesis and also acts as a storage house for the vitamins and minerals in your body.
It is one of the body parts that can regenerate itself, meaning it can repair itself when damaged. However severe damage, prolonged injury or excess alcohol or substance use can lead to
liver failure
anddiseases like cirrhosis or cancer.
It is not necessary that the liver can be damaged only by consumption of alcohol but it also gets disturbed with its chemical reaction because of poor diet. As it stores bile juice, it often comes in contact with acidic and chemical reactions.
Here are a few warning signs that your body may displayin case your liver is damaged!
Jaundice
In case of liver infection, you immediately get affected by jaundice or the yellow fever and it causes your skin to turn pale yellow and yellow eyes.
Swelling
Abnormal swelling in abdomen, legs, ankles and face is an indication of liver damage.
Loss of appetite, weight loss
If your liver is damaged, you will feel loss of appetite and it leads to drastic weight loss. You might experience frequent nausea or vomiting of blood.
Apart from
liver cancer
or liver failure, you might also be affected by
fatty liver
which is because of the high concentrated acid storage which stops the function of that body part. It can be rectified with proper diet and strict preventive measures. Other reasons that cause liver damage include type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and obstructive sleep apnea.
There are other symptoms that also indicate liver damage –
Itchy skin, Dark urine, pale stool, easy bruises and bleeding, chill flashes in the body, shortness of breath, tremors, confusion, agitation, disoriented thoughts, breath with sweet odour, sleepiness.
