‘Cancer: Relying solely on traditional therapies risky’

Intro: Former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu’s viral video extolling the virtues of a ‘special diet’ that ‘cured’ his wife of stage 4 cancer has prompted oncologists to issue a statement warning against such unproven remedies. Dr Gaurav Prakash, professor and oncologist at PGIMER Chandigarh, speaks to Shimona Kanwar about the importance of science-backed treatments

How important is diet in cancer management?
Chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries weaken a cancer patient’s digestive system considerably, making an easily digestible diet crucial. However, some food items like grapefruit juice (a strong liver enzyme stimulant) can inactivate many anti-cancer therapies. Similarly, fatty food can change the absorption pattern of anti-cancer drugs used in blood and prostate cancer. Some patients develop painful ulcers in the digestive tract (mucositis) after chemotherapy. Lemon water and citrus juices can increase their pain. Diets can be tailored to complement medical treatment, but promoting them as cancer cure may lead many patients to choose such diets over scientifically proven anti-cancer therapies, leading to cancer progression to an incurable stage. Besides, in a bid to manage their diets independently, some patients develop severe nutrient deficiencies. Only the treating doctor and dietician can help a cancer patient select specific food items according to nutritional needs.

Do foods like turmeric have anti-cancer properties?
Researchers are investigating the role of turmeric in improving various health conditions owing to its anti-inflammatory and anti-infective properties. Some clinical trials suggest that curcumin, the primary active compound in turmeric, may help reduce the spread of cancer cells, offering a potential supplementary treatment. Curcumin has shown promise in managing oral ulcers caused by anti-cancer therapies. However, turmeric should not be seen as a replacement for conventional cancer therapies. Patients must consult their healthcare providers before considering any food supplement as part of their treatment plan. Relying solely on alternative therapies without professional guidance can be risky.

Can prolonged fasting help cure advanced stage cancer?
Most patients suffering from advanced cancer (especially stage 4 cancer) lose muscle and body fat, experience weakness and anorexia, and suffer from nutritional deficiency. They need to take light meals at frequent intervals to provide required calories and nutrients in a timely manner. Many anti-cancer drugs interfere with metabolism. So, most oncologists advise against prolonged fasting as it can be dangerous.
Can sugar or gluten-rich food reduce cancer growth?
This is a common misconception. All of us should consume less sugar for overall health. However, currently available medical research does not show that stopping sugar and gluten-rich food can kill cancer cells.
