Champions Trophy: With India facing a transition, the expectation has been for the two superstars to return to domestic cricket to return to form. (PTI)
Amidst uncertainty over the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar said the team management will assess ‘where everyone is’ after the Champions Trophy.
While Rohit has dismissed any talks over his retirement after being left out of the Sydney Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, there have also been questions over Kohli’s position in the team as the two superstars battle for form.
Asked about the transition phase, Agarkar said: “It’s a month away from the Champions Trophy. These guys have been exceptional performers in one-day cricket… We’ll see once the Champions Trophy is done, we’ve got a bit more time to sit and assess where everyone is. Not just one of the players but where we go forward. But at the moment, the focus is on one-day cricket and Champions Trophy.”
The Test form of both batsmen came into question during India’s heavy 1-3 defeat in Australia. Having played only three Tests, Rohit averaged 6.20, while Kohli, despite scoring an unbeaten century in Perth, also failed to impress, scoring at 23.75.
With India facing a transition, the expectation has been for the two superstars to return to domestic cricket to return to form and justify their place in the team. Seeing the same, Rohit confirmed on Monday that he will play for Mumbai in their upcoming Ranji Trophy fixture against Jammu and Kashmir.
Kohli, too, has been included in Delhi’s provisional Ranji Trophy squad for their upcoming fixture against Saurashtra in Rajkot. Kohli’s presence will be ‘subject to availability.’
