Unlike several other legends, including his great peer in Real Madrid. Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo had stayed away from the game, apart from fleeting stints as a media pundit. But the stalwart forward has set his eyes on becoming the president if his country’s football federation.
“I can’t return to the field as many of you ask me to do,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram. “And, honestly, I don’t even think that our biggest defeats in recent years were within the four lines. They were not televised. We need to look outside the spotlight. Into the institution,” he said.
“My motivations for this candidacy are countless and perhaps the biggest of them is to believe that I can truly contribute to regain respect for Brazilian football,” he added. Since winning the 2002 World Cup, their fifth—Ronaldo was one of the stars and the golden boot winner—Brazil have stumbled in the knockouts, their title drought incensing the feverish fans and vexing the coaches.
As part of his ambition, he said he envisages to travel around his country. “I’m going to travel to all corners of Brazil, listen to all those people who need to be heard and present to the Federation a private investment project never before seen for the sustainable growth of sport in every state of the country. Continue to generate business, jobs and entertainment, with innovation. Rebuilding the credibility of the top entity of Brazilian football, with our old passion in the new times,” the two-time Ballon d’or winner said.
As part of the candidacy, he is busy selling his stakes in several clubs, La Liga side Real Valladolid, national daily O’Globo reported. “It won’t be an obstacle to my candidacy,” he was quoted as saying.
