While Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin was involved in a 32-run partnership for the seventh wicket along with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy during India’s first innings’ total of 180 in the Second Pink Ball Test in the Border Gavaskar Trophy at Adelaide Oval, the 38-year-old was criticised for his review against a Mitchell Starc yorker in the 39th over after missing the ball by a distance. The replays showed the ball crashing onto middle stump and former England cricketer Michael Vaughan termed it as the ‘best’ review he had seen.

“I saw Rohit Sharma strolling off without reviewing. That’s one of the best reviews I’ve seen. It may have been going under. He missed it by a few inches, it’s quick, it’s got length, late shape, and with that shape now, we’ve seen it so many times in Test match cricket, particularly with the pink ball,” said Vaughan sarcastically while speaking on Fox Cricket.

Indian were once placed at 87 for 5 before knocks by Reddy (42) and Ashwin (22) took them to a first innings’ total of 180 runs. Ashwin’s wicket was Starc’s fifth wicket of the innings before he removed Harshit Rana to finish with the innings’ total of six wickets. Former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh termed the yorker as almost the ball of the century. “The ball of the century almost … that was almost unplayable.” Waugh said on Fox Cricket.

Cricket writer Brydon Coverdale too shared his views on the review decision. “That from Ashwin was the worst review since Roger Ebert wrote of ‘North’ that ‘I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it,” wrote Coverdale.
