The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to take a call on whether the India women’s team needs a new captain following their early exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup in the UAE. For the first time in recent years, the Indian team led by Harmanpreet Kaur failed to even reach the knockout stages as their wait for a silverware in the ICC events continued.
The Indian Express understands that the BCCI will meet with the selection committee and head coach Amol Muzumdar to discuss Harmanpreet’s future as a captain. It is learnt that the meeting will take place before the squad for the three-match ODIs against New Zealand beginning October 24 is picked. Harmanpreet, incidentally, took over as India’s T20 captain in 2016 after they failed to make the semifinals of the tournament held at home.
Under Harmanpreet, India have been making the knockouts and even made the final of the 2020 edition, but have struggled to cross the line. And this edition, despite having a strong squad, India ended up losing to New Zealand in the opening match that severely dented their chances of making the semifinals. And last Sunday, Australia knocked them out.
Though Harmanpreet’s place remains safe in the Indian side, there is a possibility that a few support staff’s contracts may be not renewed.
“The BCCI will certainly discuss whether to have a new captain on board going ahead. The Indian board has provided everything which the team wanted and we feel it’s high time a new face leads the team going ahead. Harmanpreet will continue to be an important member of the team but the BCCI feels it’s time for transition,” a source in the Indian board said.
With the next 50-over World Cup set to take place in India, it would be interesting to see if the BCCI takes a call on the new captain before the New Zealand series at home. Such a call would mean the new captain has enough time to build a squad for the World Cup.
At the T20 World Cup, the same old problems surfaced again as they ended up with just two wins out of four matches. Though Harmanpreet played her part with the bat, inconsistent batting hampered the Indian side right through the campaign.
The Indian team had a couple of preparatory camps before flying for the World Cup. They even went early to get acclimatised to the conditions, which India believed would suit their style of play. But the World Cup ended up being a tournament to forget for India.
