Bavarian giants Bayern Munich are mourning the demise of a fan who tragically passed away while attending their Champions League match against Benfica on Wednesday.
The club confirmed the news early on Thursday morning, stating that the fan succumbed during transportation to the hospital.
The incident cast a pall of gloom over the Bayern Munich vs Benfica Champions League match. Bayern’s loyal fans opted to remain silent rather than sing or chant out of respect for the affected individual. The usually boisterous atmosphere at Bayern’s stadium for home games was noticeably muted, as fans and players alike were clearly deeply affected by the news of a medical emergency.
Bayern Munich supporters’ group Club Nr. 12 said its members would “not be supporting as usual today because of an emergency medical intervention. Life comes before sport. We wish the family and friends lots of strength.”
Bayern Munich manage to win
Despite the tragic circumstances in the stands, the Champions League match continued, with Bayern Munich securing a 1-0 victory thanks to Jamal Musiala’s goal. There was a brief celebration in the stands after the goal. But then a hush again descended in the stands.
Jamal Musiala scored from a header in the 67th-minute. The goal, set up by Harry Kane, was enough for Bayern Munich to end its two-game losing run and claim its second win of the league phase.
The club expressed its condolences to the fan’s family and friends, emphasizing that their thoughts were with the bereaved.
“We didn’t know of it during the game, just after it. We wish the family strength and best wishes, we’re thinking of all involved, and we’re hoping for the best for the individual fan,” Bayern midfielder Konrad Laimer was quoted as saying about the medical emergency by the Associated Press.
