The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) of late has been under fire for the rising dope cases and age frauds on the domestic circuit but that hasn’t deterred the World Athletics (WA) from including it in the finalists for the 2024 Member Federations Award.
The Indian Federation, headed by Adille Summariwala, is among the six shortlisted federations for the 2024 award that features athletics federations from Ghana, Paraguay, Portugal, the Solomon Islands and the United States of America.
The World Athletics, in a media release, highlighted India’s progress in coaches’ education and kids’ athletics programme.
“The Athletics Federation of India further developed its Coaches Education Program in 2024. Offering three progressive courses, the program is designed to elevate the quality of athletics coaching across the country. Since its launch, more than 3000 coaches have completed the AFI Pre Level 1 course, making a significant impact on grassroots coaching,” the world body said.
“The AFI is also working to broaden the reach of its Kids’ Athletics program. Notably, its U14 program has seen significant success, with more than 4000 annual participants and the introduction of Kids Javelin,” World Athletics added. The winner will be announced on World Athletics’ platforms, as part of the World Athletics Awards 2024.
