Former Chennai Super Kings player Ambati Rayudu on Thursday posted an old video of CSK players who were gesturing 5 indicating the number of times they had won the IPL. The post which is captioned, “Sometimes a gentle reminder is required” came a day after Royal Challengers Bengaluru were eliminated from the IPL after losing to Rajasthan Royals.
On Wednesday during commentary after the RR vs RCB match, Rayudu had said that passion and celebration don’t win a team the IPL trophy which was a veiled dig at the Faf du Plessis-led franchise.
“If you talk about RCB, it shows that only passion and celebration don’t win you trophies. You don’t get the IPL trophy just by reaching the playoffs. Don’t think you will win the trophy just by beating CSK,” he had said.
The issue between the two franchises have been bubbling since RCB managed to pull off a heist against the CSK in their final group stage game of IPL 2024 last Saturday. Needing to defend 17 runs in the final over, Yash Dayal got Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s wicket on the second ball to help RCB qualify.
It was one of the biggest turnarounds of IPL 2024: the RCB team was at the bottom of the standings of the IPL at one stage.
So naturally, the RCB players celebrated their feat wildly.
However, visuals from the ground appeared to indicate that RCB players were so engrossed in celebrating their win, that they may have missed out on a few formalities.
This irked analysts like former England captain Michael Vaughan and Harsha Bhogle. Both felt that RCB players should have first shook hands with CSK players, especially Dhoni, since there is uncertainty about whether Dhoni will play in the IPL again after this. Since Dhoni has retired from international cricket, the IPL is the only form of cricket he currently plays.
