Afghanistan veteran player Mohammad Nabi has announced that he will retire from the 50-over format after the Champions Trophy 2025.
“In my mind, from the last World Cup, I was retired but then we qualified for the Champions Trophy and I felt if I could play that, it would be great,” Nabi told the broadcasters after the third ODI which Afghanistan won by five wickets.
Afghanistan won the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh 2-1 and Nabi was judged as the Player Of The Tournament for his contributions with the bat and ball. “Last series I did not do well with the bat, I worked hard before the series, that was my target to perform in this series and great to perform for the team,” he said. He would reveal that he had been pondering about quitting the format since last year’s ODI World Cup.
According to ESPNcricinfo Nabi has told the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) that we will continue to be part of other formats. “We will see, but no, I will not play for long. God willing, after the Champions Trophy, we will say goodbye to the ODIs,” Nabi said.
The 39-year-old has played 167 ODIs for Afghanistan and 3600 runs at an average of 27.48 with 17 fifties and two centuries to his name. With the ball, he picked up 172 wickets at an average of 32.47.
With the bat Nabi has made a reputation of being a lethal finisher coming down the order with the ball he is a traditional off-spinner.
“This is what I am going to bowl. It will be usually around a length, usually the stock ball with the one not turning as much as variation, some little changes in pace,” Nabi said about his off-spin in an interview.
Afghanistan qualified for the Champions Trophy, thanks to their sixth-place finish during last year’s World Cup. It would also be Afghanistan’s first-ever appearance in the eight-team competition scheduled to be held in Pakistan in February next year.
